It was my first time at The Fillmore, a relatively new venue which opened in October 2015. It had underground feel with small touches, including their own take on Philly's 'LOVE' statue with an I instead of an O to spell 'LIVE' and a wall of concert posters made to look like the American flag. When the doors opened to go from the lobby to the auditorium, four chandeliers hung from the ceiling. The first floor was standing only as a balcony wrapped around on the second floor.
Living Colour musicianship was second to none with all four members, including guitarist Vernon
Reid and singer Corey Glover, were on top of their game. They played many different genes of music ranging from punk to metal to rap. Covers included The Notorious B.I.G. and Prince and they wrapped up the set with their hit "Cult of Personality." During the final song, Glover jumped off stage, ran through the crowd and appeared on the balcony a few seconds later with the cheering of approval from the crowd.
I was there to see Dinosaur Jr for the second time as they opened for Primus almost a year ago to the day at Festival Pier. To promote their new album Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, to be released on August 5th, they played new songs "Goin Down" and "Tiny." Both brought out the classic Dinosaur Jr sound. They played my favorite song "The Lung" to open their set and finished with one of the greatest covers, The Cure's "Just Like Heaven." J. Mascis muttered into the mic while his heavy guitar accompanied by foot petals spat into the front row, bassist #loubarlowshair bounced around the stage shoeless throughout the set and Murph pounded on his drums effortlessly. Before the show, my brother, Owen, bought one of the coolest merchandise items ever with a skateboard deck autographed by the Dinosaur Jr trio. The boards were left over from the sold out shows at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. Only 70 autographed boards were released and only 2 remained before Owen jumped on the opportunity.
The sold out crowd released their cooped up energy as the opening spanish dialogue to Ritual de lo Habitual came over the speakers. Jane's Addiction came on the stage and jumped right into "Stop!" They went on to play their breakthrough album in its entirety. It was my second time hearing an album played in full, as Pearl Jam played Ten all the way through to start their show in Philadelphia on April 29, 2016. After tearing through the album, Jane's left the stage to a thunderous applause. They came back out for the encore with the explosive bass line of "Mountain Song." Finishing the show with acoustic guitars and a steel drum, the crowd sung every word to "Jane Says" and left more than satisfied.
